NOSH is a contemporary Qiqihar BBQ restaurant and karaoke bar that pays homage to traditional Northern Chinese food culture, while embracing neighboring countries’ influences, including Japan, Korea, and Russia. Forged with skill and passion, this family-owned restaurant has been a years-long journey in the making; the result is a welcoming, eccentric space with a boisterous bar and a 12-foot screen for karaoke, sporting events, and shows.
NOSH is the neighbor and sister restaurant of East Grill Karaoke and East Dumpling House, a 10 year stable of the DMV community. These three restaurants are unified under one goal: to provide an encompassing view into Northeast Chinese food culture.
Qiqihar BBQ is a sizzling barbecue style that rose to prominence in the 1980s in Qiqihar, China, a frigid city in the country's far northeast corner. A reflection of its 'melting pot' location, this delicious cuisine mixes ancient Chinese flavors with the quick cooking style invented in neighboring Korea.
For us, having lived for many generations in neighboring Harbin, China, Qiqihar BBQ provides a taste of home. Harbin, having been part of Russia until the 1920s, means that our rendition of Qiqihar actually features hints of Russian cuisine as well.
What to expect from Qiqihar:
The meats are often coated in complex spice rubs featuring cumin, Sichuan peppercorn, chili powder, sesame, and garlic before being thinly sliced and thrown over hot coals. The resulting flavors are smoky, crispy, and full of spice. Vegetables, shrimp, fish and more all make appearances alongside the usual lamb and beef. The quick cooking style and spicy seasonings also differ from ancient Chinese roasting methods. In this way, qiqihar transforms Chinese barbecue into something modern and scintillating. With sparks flying and mouthwatering aromas wafting, this fascinating and delicious fusion of Asian food history is a must-try for any traveler in northern China.
